Around mid-May every year, we hear from lots of people who are struggling to sell. Spring and summer are particularly hard for most sellers – but not all.

To help you gather insights into how your niche and competitors are performing, we’ve added sales trend graphs to some of our SEO tools.

Hover your cursor over the bars of any keyword's graph to see its sales volume over the past 15 months.

With these graphs, you can:

  • Compare your monthly sales volumes with your peers and other shops in your niche.

  • See how your niche trends over a 15-month time frame.

  • Get ideas for what to sell from successful shops during slow times.

Note that each figure in the "Sales" column is that shop’s all-time total sales. Some Etsy sellers also like to track how many sales their competitors have had each month. This new feature makes tracking your competitors' monthly sales a breeze!

How to interpret the graphs

Examples

What you can learn from this

Flatlined:

The shop has either been inactive for at least 15 months or it's closed.

Trending down:

The shop's products may no longer be on trend.

This is not a good shop to get ideas from.

Abruptly flatlined:

The shop has recently been suspended, closed, or put in vacation mode.

Seasonal spikes:

The shop's sales spike in November and December. This means that the shop makes the most sales around the holidays.

This is a good shop to get ideas from when you're doing Christmas market research.

Trending up year-on-year:

The shop is trending up year-on-year. This particular example is a rare exception -- it's not common to see an Etsy shop make more sales in April than it did in December.

This is a shop to watch, especially if you want to get ideas for what to sell in spring.

Trending way down year-on-year:

This shop has not been able to repeat its past success. It may have failed to evolve as trends changed. Or, perhaps the owner did something that hurt the shop's listing quality scores.

This is not a good shop to get ideas from.

Niche-wide downturns

In some categories, a lot of top-selling shops experience low sales at the same time of year. If your shop is experiencing a downturn in sales, it may simply be a slow time of the year for your niche.

Example: due to a recurring niche-wide downturn, many vintage top sellers have a hard time selling from December through February.

However, some shops will "buck the trend" each year. That is, they will succeed amidst a widespread downturn in sales in their category. These are good shops to follow for inspiration.
