With Google Analytics 4 (GA4), you get enhanced reporting and capabilities that are not available in your Etsy shop's stats. GA4 is an excellent addition for sellers who want to know more about their potential customers, the keywords these customers used to find their listings, and so much more.

We are going to keep these instructions brief. We are assuming that you have already created a Google Analytics account (for your website, perhaps) and that you just need to create a new property for your Etsy shop.

Steps

1

Log in to your Google Analytics account here.

2

Click "Admin" at the bottom of the menu on the left.

3

Click "Create" at the top of the menu on the left. Then, select "Property" from the dropdown menu to create a unique tag ID for your Etsy shop. Your tag ID should only be used for your Etsy shop, not for any other website. Do not share your tag ID with anyone.

4

Enter your shop's name in the "Property Name" field and then click "Next."

5

To help Google "get to know" your shop, let them know your business's industry category and size. Then, click "Next."

6

Define your business objectives and click "Create."

7

Choose a platform.

8

Enter "www.etsy.com" in the "Website URL" field, your shop's name in the "Stream name" field, and then click the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the gray "Enhanced measurement" box below.

9

IMPORTANT: do not skip this step.

Click "Show advanced settings" in the Site Search section.

10

Enter the value "ga_search_query"

in the "Search Term Query Parameter" box and click "Save."

IMPORTANT: If you do not do this, Google Analytics will not be able to tell you what keywords shoppers used to find your listings.

11

Click "Create & continue."

12

Copy your measurement ID number from the "Stream details" page.

13

Go to your shop's Web Analytics page

Paste your measurement ID into the Web Property ID box.

Then click "Save."

At this point, your new tracking should be working and collecting data. Whenever a buyer looks at one of your listings, you will be able to see it in your Google Analytics real-time reports shortly afterward.

Testing

Once you have completed the steps above, go to your Google Analytics dashboard and do the following:

  1. Click the reports icon (located just below the home icon).

  2. Click "Realtime overview."

  3. Check the "Active Users in the Last 5 Minutes" section.

  4. Wait until someone looks at one of your listings.

Alternatively, you can check the source code of one of your Etsy listings. You should see something like this:

{
"event": "sellerTrackerEventGA4",
"sellerTrackerID": "G-XXXXXXXXXX",
"sellerTrackerDomain": "etsy.com"
}
