With Google Analytics 4 (GA4), you get enhanced reporting and capabilities that are not available in your Etsy shop's stats. GA4 is an excellent addition for sellers who want to know more about their potential buyers, the keywords these shoppers used to find their listings, and so much more.

We are going to keep these instructions brief. We are assuming that you have already created a Google Analytics account (for your website, perhaps) and that you just need to create a new property for your Etsy shop.

Steps

1

Log in to your Google Analytics account here: https://google.com/analytics

2

Click on the Admin link at the bottom of the left menu.

3

Click on the Create Property button to create a unique tag ID for your Etsy shop. Your tag ID should only be used for your Etsy shop, not for any other website. Do not share your tag ID with anyone.

4

In the Property Name box, enter your shop name and then click the Next button.

5

To help Google understand your business, let them know your industry category and business size, then click the Next button.

6

Define your business objectives and click the Create button.

7

Select the Web platform.

8

In the Set up data stream pop up you need to enter www.etsy.com in the Website URL box, your shop's name in the Stream name box, and then click the Settings icon.

9

IMPORTANT: do not skip this step.

You need to click on the Show advanced settings link in the Site Search section.

10

In the Search Term Query Parameter box enter the value ga_search_query

and then click the Save button.

IMPORTANT: If you do not do this, Google Analytics will not be able to tell you what keywords potential buyers used to find your listings.

11

Click the Create stream button.

12

In the Web stream details page you will see your Measurement ID. Copy the ID number.

13

Go to your shop's Web Analytics page

Paste your Measurement ID into the Web Property ID box.

Then click the Save button.

At this point, your new tracking should be working and collecting data. Whenever a buyer looks at one of your listings, you will be able to see it in your Google Analytics real-time reports a few seconds later.

Note: in our tests, it took about 15 minutes before we started to see stats.

Testing

Once you have completed the steps above, go to your Google Analytics page and do the following:

  1. Click on the Reports icon

  2. Select Realtime report

  3. Check the USERS IN LAST 30 MINUTES section

  4. Wait until someone looks at one of your listings

Alternatively, you can check the source code of one of your Etsy listings. You should see something like this:

{
"event": "sellerTrackerEventGA4",
"sellerTrackerID": "G-XXXXXXXXXX",
"sellerTrackerDomain": "etsy.com"
}
